People for Animals (PFA) is creating a lasting systems change for farmed animals in India

Problem

Across India, millions of animals suffer in industrial farming systems that prioritize efficiency over welfare. Battery cages confine egg-laying hens in spaces smaller than a sheet of paper, dairy cattle face overcrowding and poor living conditions, and fish farming practices often neglect basic welfare standards. These systems not only cause immense suffering but also contribute to public health concerns, environmental degradation, and unsustainable food production practices.

Solution

People for Animals (PFA) is taking a multi-faceted approach to transform animal farming in India with a focus on improving the wellbeing of animals:

Poultry: PFA is running multiple initiatives to help build a cage-free ecosystem in India. They are actively engaging with institutional consumers, producers, and government agencies to provide training for farmers, facilitate business connections, and develop implementation guides for transitioning to cage-free systems.

Dairy: PFA advocates for stronger regulations and enforcement of welfare standards in dairy operations, pushing for proper infrastructure, appropriate stocking densities, and compliance with environmental norms.

Pigs: PFA has developed comprehensive Best Practices Guides for pig rearing in collaboration with the National Research Centre on Pig, creating India's only standardized operating procedures for humane pig farming.

Fish: PFA partners with the Fish Welfare Initiative to improve conditions in fish farms, focusing on disease control and enhanced welfare standards.

People For Animals's Impact

Poultry Transformation:

  • Trained over 1,500 farmers in cage-free egg production techniques

  • Established the Eco Eggs Cooperative (EEC) to connect farmers with government schemes and subsidies

  • Secured commitments from major institutional consumers and online retailers

  • Developed Blue Nest Standards for certification of genuine cage-free eggs

  • Established model cage-free farms across multiple states to serve as training centres

Dairy Improvements:

  • Secured by-laws in seven local authorities mandating registration and welfare standards

  • Initiated enforcement actions against over 5,000 non-compliant dairy units in Delhi alone

  • Achieved penalties and show-cause notices for 134 non-compliant dairy operations across two states

Pig Welfare:

  • Created India's only standardized operating procedures for pig farming, now incorporated into official training programs of each state.
